Gary Lawrence
Operation Manager
experience over 30 years Logistics experience in operations, strategy and proposals worldwide operations including Manufacturing, Energy, Oil and Gas.

Christine Nangole
Logistics Operator
Experience 9 Years’ experience working in East African coffee origins managing Logistics processes and shipments to Europe Asia America Africa and Australia in Food processing and Coffee sector.
1977
Foundation
YGL was founded to address the huge demand for freight services in the Gulf region due to the boom the region was experiencing which led to large Port congestion at Jeddah and Hodeidah which was impacting on the HSA group operations.
YGL championed a solution by chartering smaller vessels (maximum length 70 meters, draft 21 feet) that could bypass these delays and berth immediately.
Collaborating with Otto Danielsen, a Danish family business, YGL established a monthly service linking major North European ports (Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp) with Red Sea destinations like Hudayadah and Mokha.
1981 - 1982
Fleet Expansion
To meet the ongoing and growing demand, YGL commissioned two purpose-built vessels:
- 1981: The Yemen Pioneer was built by Smit and launched in Hoogezand-Sappemeer, Netherlands.
- 1982: The Yemen Pride, was delivered from Bodewes Shipyard.
These mixed cargo vessels efficiently transported breakbulk and containerized cargoes

1981
Enhancing Capacity
The Yemen Pioneer and Pride were both upgraded with an additional hold and crane, increasing capacity to 10,000 MT
This enhancement demonstrated YGL’s adaptability and commitment to supporting growing trade volumes.
1988
Strategic Partnerships and Innovation
YGL partnered with Jordan National Shipping Line to form Falcon Container Line, enhancing its network and offerings. During this period, YGL also embraced technological advancements by installing a Wang mainframe system for container tracking and accounting.
1989 - 1992
Navigating Challenges
YGL expanded its global reach, with the Yemen Pioneer and Yemen Pride operating on a time-charter basis worldwide. Due to the emerging container industry with many new builds and increased capacity by the major carriers impacted the demand for the older YGL vessels leading to the cessation of Falcon Container Line and the selling of the YGL vessels to Chinese interests.
Despite these challenges, YGL remained resilient, forging a strategic alliance with other major carriers in the Red Sea Express Co-operative. Further alliances were forged with DSR and WEC Lines. The WEC line relationship was a large benefit to YGL for restitution of the YGL own containers and the partnership exists today and YGL receives highly competitive rates from WEC for the Red Sea ports.
1990 - 2000
Adapting to Industry Trends
As the container market grew dominant, YGL evolved from breakbulk shipping to focus on containerized logistics and project cargo ensuring relevance and efficiency in a changing industry.
2021
New Leadership and Vision
Gary and Christine joined the team, bringing over 50 years of combined expertise in global logistics including heavy lift, part charters and oversize cargo movements, FMCC, steel, machinery and diverse commodity shipments into challenging locations for which rates are traditionally volatile.
2022 - 2023
Waste Heat Recovery Project
In 2022 to 2023, YGL delivered a complete Waste Heat Recovery Project from India to Aden including heavy lift and oversized shipments and delivered around 3000 TEU globally from 2022 to 2024 has positioned YGL for a new era of growth and innovation.
With YGL’s current network, we can deliver all modes of transport globally and have specific areas of expertise and experience from global origins to the Red Sea and African Ports.
